Project 02 - Educational Facilities | October-December 2010

The second studio assignment of the semester/Project02 is to develop a educational facilities in Urban area in Central Jakarta. The students will have to select a proper site (5000-8000 sqm) in order to develop his/her proposed educational program in two urban regions: grogol or cikini area.

Some constraints to be considered: BCR @50-60%, FAR @ 2 and maximum 4 storey (excluding 1 storey of basement). The program should be consisted of several masses (3 masses as minimum).

The submission of the second assignment of the studio/Project02 will be held on Monday, December 13, 2010 at 12.oo. And the Final presentation will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 10.00.

Midterm Review of Selected Project01

Daniel E Gunawan's Project01 - Art Salon

According to the individual analysis on the region, kemang has transformed into a region that not only a place of expat's residentials but also a place that emerged small creative industry including furniture studio, crafting and product design showroom.
The mentioned statement leads the student -daniel e gunawan- to establish a hospitality facility that accomodate artist community activities in kemang region. The program combines temporarily gallery, cafe and workshop into hub for artists which expected to intensify their art activities and event.









Rinaldy Santoso's Project01 - Executive Club

The program proposed by the student -rinaldy santoso- try to bridge business activities that occured along jalan kemang raya and jalan antasari, by locating a new hospitality facilities for executives class in between those area.
The program combines medium convention hall and temporary lodging for executives.







Some critisms for the student's design:

• There are some lacks of explanation about how the design enrich the existing urban space which has to be applies at every scale, including the region, city, neighbourhood and the street.
• Lack of connections seems occured in the design, which showed through inadequate of integration of physical and visual designed space on the site to its surounding.
• The architectural design is too much focusing on the building -massing, ignoring the space created within the masses or surrounding the masses.

Week03 - Analysis of Proposed Program

The Week03 task for students is about analyzing the hospitality program to be placed in Kemang area. The students need to take account the following questions:

• what are the potencies of kemang area has?
• what kind of program that appropriate to be developed in kemang relative to the contex?
• which spot -specifically- of kemang that appropriate for the proposed program and what reasons that make so? (comparing to the other available spot/spaces

Further, the students will have to choose 5 keywords that can represent or describe the potencies of kemang related to the program they propose. Those keywords will be applied into individual experimental-model called Design Vehicle (DV). The individual DV is expected to be a generator of idea for design exploration in all stages of the designing process.

Week01 - Appreciating Context

What is meant by context? Context is the character and setting of the area within which a projected scheme will sit. It is its natural as well as human history;the forms of the settlements,buildings and spaces;its ecology and archaeology;its location,and the routes that pass through it.Context also includes people,the individuals living in or near an area and how communities are organised so that citizens become real participants in the projected development. A thorough appreciation of the overall site context is the starting point for designing a distinct place. (Urban Design Compendium. English Partnerships and The Housing Corporation)

The Week01 and week02 tasks for the students are to establish their basic knowledge and understanding about Kemang area as a context for the project01. The students will make an observation about kemang context through mapping and diagramming to illustrate the following aspects:
